The film’s editing and technical achievements are why it’s memorable to this day.  Theatrically released in 1986, the film would earn Oscar nominations for Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects, Editing, and Best Original Song.  The film would only come away with a single win with Giorgio Moroder (music) and Tom Whitlock (lyrics) taking the Oscar for their song, “Take My Breath Away.”

If I’m being honest, there’s really no argument that the best scenes are when the military planes are in the air.  Despite the mixed reviews upon release, the film managed to become a commercial hit.  The film would earn $356 million against a $15 million production budget!  The performances from Tom Cruise and Kelly McGinnis are among the best things in the film outside of the action sequences that really drive the excitement.  There’s also one memorable quote to come from the film and owns a place in cinematic history.  It’s when Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) and Nick Bradshaw(Anthony Edwards) recite the following line: “I feel the need–the need for speed!”
