BAFTA Winners for 2019

The EE Brtish Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) for 2019 were presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in a ceremony hosted by Joanna Lumley.

Today’s BAFTA ceremony is one of the last ceremonies to be held of the major predictors going into the Oscars on February 24th.  The ceremony takes places days before the final round of Oscar voting begins–with voting to start on February 12th and end on February 19th at 5 PM PT.

The BAFTA awards tend to typically honor British films more so than American releases.  While Roma saw some big wins, The Favourite came off as a major winner.  Not just in the awards it won but Olivia Colman’s win has certainly shook up an uncertain Oscar race for Best Actress.  While Glenn Close (The Wife) has won several awards, she tied with Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) during the Critics’ Choice Awards.  Here we are two weeks out and the race is far from over!

Best Actor in a Leading Role was once thought to be a lock for Christian Bale for his role as Dick Cheney in Vice.  With Rami Malek taking home a SAG Award and now a BAFTA, the race seems to be turning in a different direction.  Anything can happen and we’ll see what the Oscar voters decide.

Best Supporting Actor is likely a lock for Mahershala Ali at this point.  Say what any of us will about Green Book as a whole, nobody should be taking things out on actors who had no clue that family members would be speaking out on the film.
