With the 91st Oscars airing tonight on ABC, I present my final predictions as to how I believe that the awards will be honored during the telecast.
One of the biggest question marks for me is certainly Best Supporting Actress. I would certainly not in any way be opposed to Regina King taking home the award for If Beale Street Could Talk. She won during the Spirit Awards ceremony last night but the strong factor here is the lack of a SAG Award nomination. There’s a considerable overlap given that the Actors’ branch is the largest Academy branch. Will this be enough to overcome? It’s entirely possible that SAG was wrong in general this year, too. After all, Emily Blunt didn’t see her nomination repeated by the Academy while winning for A Quiet Place.
With Best Original Screenplay, my gut here wants to go with Adam McKay’s script for Vice but it seems like The Favourite has the strongest chance of taking home the win. No matter what happens tonight, Eighth Grade certainly won’t be repeating tonight. It’s rather surprising that the WGA winner isn’t nominated this evening.
Best Documentary seems like it could go in any direction. The current political climate is why I’m certainly leaning towards RBG. While Free Solo is an excellent piece of cinema, I think RBG probably takes the win.
The shorts are almost always a crapshot. The best bet is to probably go with whatever Disney or Pixar do for animated short. This year’s winner will probably be Bao but Animal Behaviour holds a special place in my heart. Similarly, I’ll forever champion Richard Raymond’s Souls of Totality starring Tatiana Maslany and Tom Cullen. Even more importantly, this film not only took place during an eclipse but captured it on film! It certainly blew me away during Tribeca in April.
While Visual Effects could very well go to Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, watch out for First Man.
Unfortunately, some wonderful films were truly robbed. These include as If Beale Street Could Talk, First Man, Won’t You Be My Neighbor and Eighth Grade.
