Three upcoming Star Wars films starting every other year in 2022 were included when Disney announced their slate through 2027.
The first of the three is slated for December 16, 2022. The next two will follow on December 20, 2024 and December 18, 2026. Meanwhile, the fifth Indiana Jones installment is set for July 9, 2021.
The new Star Wars films will switch off every year with the upcoming Avatar sequels. The latter of which will get their December release one year earlier in 2021. The reason why there are no massive sci-fi films in Disney’s schedule for December 2020 is because of Cruella and West Side Story. With the live-action film and Steven Spielberg’s take on the classic musical, it’s wise for Disney to not compete with their other films.
As for the three untitled films, my best speculation is that they are the planned Rian Johnson trilogy. This trilogy was first announced in 2017, just over a month before the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. While the anthology films are on hold indefinitely, Johnson is still working on the trilogy. What we currently know about the film is that Rian Johnson will write and direct the trilogy, joined by producer Ram Bergman. We also know that this trilogy is separate from the Skywalker saga. It is expected to explore another area of the galaxy.
The other possibility could be the films from Game of Thrones series creators David Benioff and D.B. Wess. Their planned films were announced in February 2018. Seeing as how Game of Thrones is still finishing up its final season, the best bet is that Johnson’s trilogy will come first.
As the haters came out online in full force today, everyone needs to be reminded that Star Wars is for everyone.
