The 27th Screen Actors Guild Awards were held this evening during what is probably one of the shortest SAG Awards telecasts.
Tonight’s ceremony honors the best outstanding individual, cast and ensemble performances as chosen by the actors guild. Like with other major awards shows, SAG-AFTRA extended the eligibility period with February 28, 2021 being the last date.
There are noticeable differences between tonight’s nominees and the upcoming Oscars ceremony. Most notably, the BAFTA nominees don’t agree with Oscar and SAG. I’ll explain that in just a few moments. If the SAG Awards forecast holds, we’re looking at one of the most diverse award winners among the Oscar acting categories.
Maria Bakalova’s road to an Oscar win for her performance as Tutar in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm just became tougher. Alas, a win tonight just wasn’t meant to be. There’s still plenty of time remaining before Oscar Sunday.
The Best Actress race is even harder to pinpoint following Viola Davis’s win tonight for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Oscars and SAG disagree on one of their four slots. Instead of Amy Adams, Oscar went with Andra Day. Across the pond, BAFTA only has two of this year’s contenders in their 6-actress field. None of which are Davis or Promising Young Women‘s Carey Mulligan. FWIW, BAFTA nominee Alfre Woodard was largely snubbed when Clemency was eligible during the 2019 awards season. I’ll state it here again: Alfre Woodard was on all of my awards nomination ballots in 2019. But I digress.
Regarding the Best Cast Ensemble, it’s not uncommon for a major Best Picture frontrunner to not pick up a nomination here. This is exactly what happened in the case of Nomadland. Could Nomadland pull out the win on Oscar Sunday without a SAG Award nomination in the category? It would not be the first time.
And the SAG Awards winners are…
