Whoopi Goldberg Is Wrong About the Holocaust

During a debate about the recent ban of Maus, Whoopi Goldberg discussed the Holocaust on The View and got the facts wrong in doing so.

Goldberg said the following about the Holocaust: “The Holocaust isn’t about race. No. It’s not about race.” It gets further infuriating shortly thereafter when Goldberg said: “Well, this is white people doing it to white people. So, this is y’all go fight amongst yourselves.

Whoopi Goldberg is wrong, wrong, and, yes, wrong because Jews are not white. Light-skinned Jews might benefit from white privilege because of skin color but at the end of the day, we’re not white. It’s conditional based on who you talk to. The far-right sees light-skinned Jews as not white while the far left sees Jews as white supremacists. Believe me when I say that I am sickened by the far-left’s rhetoric when they compare Jews to Nazis. I grew up in a city where the antisemitic country club was right across from the main Jewish campus. I’m an Orthodox Jewish trans woman and I’ve already lost left-wring trans spaces solely because of being Jewish.

When one listens to comments being made by Goldberg, it makes you wonder what people are teaching about the Holocaust. For one, Goldberg made the argument that the Holocaust was not about race. It was 100% about race because Adolf Hitler, like his fellow Nazis, viewed Jews as an other, as an undesirable people. Remember how he viewed the Aryan race as the master race? Or do people just want to forget this is if it helps heir own narrative? It was not rooted in religious discrimination as Ilhan Omar would have you think. Repeat after me: Jews are not white but an ethno-religious people. Saying that Jews are white only goes onto erase those Jews who are Black, Brown, and Asian, among others. When I fill out race/ethnicity on a form, I do not check off white. No, I check other and write in ASHKENAZI JEWISH.

If you didn’t watch The View on Monday, the comments quickly went viral. I saw it on an Instagram story before ultimately rolling my eyes and going WTF. Whatever educators are teaching about the Holocaust needs to change because this isn’t it. Whoopi Goldberg would be wise to watch the Oscar-winning documentary Genocide as well as Antisemitism, the latter of which is streaming on Ovid.

Edit: Goldberg tweeted an apology a bit after 7 PM CT.

Her statement said:

On today’s show, I said that the Holocaust “is not about race, but about man’s inhumanity to man.” I should have said it is about both. As Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League shared, “The Holocaust was about the Nazi’s systemic annihilation of the Jewish people – who they deemed an inferior race.” I stand corrected.

The Jewish people around the world have always had my support and that will never waiver. I’m sorry for the hurt I have caused.

Written with my sincerest apologies,

Whoopi Goldberg
