Game Night: Comedy-Thriller Arrives on 4K Ultra HD

Over six years after its theatrical release, mystery comedy Game Night is finally available for fans to watch at home on 4K Ultra HD. When Warner Bros. first released the film on home video in 2018, they did not include a 4K UHD release. Now that the film is available on 4K UHD, it’s just the 4K UHD disc and not the digital copy. On top of that, the disc is manufactured on demand in the BD-R format. As such, it will play in nearly all leading Blu-ray players that have the latest firmware updates. However, Microsoft Xbox One does not currently support BD-R playback.

Game Night blends in the comedy and thrills in a balanced mixture that works so well, including camera movements that heighten the film’s stakes.

The film’s opening prologue sets the tone as Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams) meetas rival captains at a random bar’s Game Night following a fun montage depicting their blooming relationship set to Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now”. The action truly gets started when Max’s brother, Brooks (Kyle Chandler), comes to town. Brooks wants in on the game night action so he hires a company, Murder We Wrote, to throw a murder mystery party, complete with both a fake FBI agent and hoodlums.

The other game night regulars include Ryan (Billy Magnussen) and his date, Sarah (Sharon Horgan), and childhood sweethearts Kevin (Lamorne Morris) and Michelle (Kylie Bunbury). Sarah is an upgrade from the usual Instagram models that Ryan usually brings with him as she’s very much an equal. There’s more than meets the surface for Kevin and Michelle allegedly involving a notable Hollywood actor.

You can find the rest of my review from its theatrical release here. The film gets better every time I watch, including an arguably Oscar-worthy, scene-stealing performance from Jesse Plemons as Officer Gary. McAdams also deadpans one of the best lines of the film when she said “Oh, no, he died!” Phenomenal! It remains an iconic line all these years later. Even though the disc does not include a digital copy, it is worth the upgrade.
