76th Emmy Awards Winners

Hosted by both Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, the 76th Emmy Awards are being presented this evening from the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE.

The telecast includes 25 categories to be awarded. I’ll be updating with the winners as they are announced live on ABC.

Eugene Levy: “If things go south, my name is pronounced Martin Short.”

Eugene Levy jokes about whether The Bear is a comedy: “The Bear is nominated for 23 Emmys tonight, making it the most nominated comedy in history. Now, I love the show, I love the show, and I know some of you will be expecting us to make a joke about whether The Bear is really a comedy—but in the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes.”

Dan Levy: “Confrontation is anxiety-inducing, especially for my 77-year-old father…I don’t want to be alarmist here but having my father cut you off could kill him.”

There is a bit about the lair of the TV dad. It’s clear that nobody watched Modern Family.

Elizabeth Debicki did not write anything down because she’s very superstitious.

Candice Bergen goes after Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance, saying he would never attack a character with kids. “My work here is done…meow.” Bergen’s Murphy Brown had been attacked by then-Vice President Dan Quayle for a storyline that saw her character choosing to be a single mother. If anyone is wondering, no, the original series is not streaming anywhere because of music licensing.

Oh, hey, it’s Sam Richardson!

It’s time for TV villains. It wouldn’t be a TV villain bit without Giancarlo Esposito. Don’t worry. I’m fine. It’s fine. Everything’s fine.

Listen, there is more than enough between TV and streaming to split up Limited, Anthology, and Movie acting categories. Why is this not happening yet? MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Maybe John Oliver should have written down his speech. How do you screw up your child’s name during a thank-you speech?!?

There’s a Lorne Michaels bit featuring a number of SNL stars.

Now it’s a tribute to TV moms.

Fun fact: Eugene Levy came really close to playing Toby Ziegler in The West Wing. Richard Schiff won Emmy for his portrayal in 2000. You can bring home the complete series on Blu-ray at the start of October.

Billy Crystal marks the 50th anniversary of his first appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

They are using the drama writing category to pay tribute to doctors.

There’s a backstage bar at the Emmys? Well, so much for those drinks…

Henry Winkler and Ron Howard appear together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Happy Days. Ron Howard just won an Emmy for his documentary, Jim Henson Idea Man.

John Leguizamo delivers the first DEI joke of the night–diligence, excellence, and imagination. Tonight features the most diverse list of nominees in Emmy history. He mentions needing more representation from minority groups. What pleases me is the inclusion of Jews. Despite an arguable over-representation in Hollywood, Jews are an overall minority in the US and across the world.

I’ve watched a lot of Greg Berlanti-produced series through the years. Strangely, this is the first time I recall ever hearing him speak.

Previously announced Olympians Caeleb Dressel and Ilona Maher are joined by Olympian Stephen Nedoroscik and Paralympian Ezra Frech.

Now time for the In Memoriam tribute. Leave it to Jimmy Kimmel to announce “The Emmy for deceased industry professional that we will miss the most goes to–” and he uses the opportunity to pay tribute to the late Bob Newhart. His first win came for The Big Bang Theory.

And now for the TV cops.

Hey there. TV lawyers…

A number of cast members from The West Wing reunite. Ah, an era where storylines seemed far-fetch or utterly ridiculous. Where are Rob Lowe and Bradley Whitford?

There’s a Schitt’s Creek reunion to present Catherine O’Hara for the presentation of Outstanding Comedy series. She rips up the envelope, only to open another envelope.
