Worst Films of 2024: Why You Won’t Find Them Here

Solzy at the Movies has not published a list of worst films since before 2020 and do not expect to find such a list going into the future.

The reason for not doing so in both 2020 and 2021 is because those years, for the most part, were dumpster fire years. Not so much because of the offerings at movie theater or streaming services but because of the pandemic. But anyway, the way I see it is: why do I need to kick someone while they’re down? I mean, they already had to read the negative reviews, if they read any reviews of their film at all. At the end of the day, I know what films are on my list but I’m not going to write said list in public and certainly not on my site.

I’m going to be honest–there were some films this year that didn’t work for me at all. So much so that I opted against reviewing them. I did formally review some of them. If I loathe something with every fiber of my being, it is an obligation to get my feelings out there. Were there films that had pacing issues and led to my looking at my watch too often? I’m sure of it but I cannot think of them off the top of my head. Believe me, it’s going too slow when I’m already looking at my watch every 5 minutes, if not less. If watching at home, I would be turning off the boring movies within the first 20 minutes. If I feel that I could be making better use of my time, I will. There’s nothing better than a 5-star nap.

I would rather discuss the films that are good. For instance, every day that I am able to introduce someone to the joy that is Bad Shabbos is a good day. The film only recently started its theatrical release. Please exercise patience! Obviously, the strikes had something of an impact on the release schedule but you could still find some smaller gems during the calendar year, such as Thelma. I’m still figuring out my top films of the year so I’m a bit slower to publish than in prior years. If you’re looking for an old-school but stressful popcorn thriller, watch Carry-On on Netflix at your soonest convenience. Two of the best movies this year are September 5 and A Complete Unknown. I’m only sorry that more people have to wait to see them, especially September 5.

My apologies for burning your eyes with the crime against humanity that is Cats. However, my last worst films list ran in 2019 so it’s the last such still that I’ll be using. Taylor Swift and the entire cast deserved so much better than that monstrosity.

But yeah, if you’re looking for the worst films of 2023, you won’t find them here because I no longer want any part in that negativity. Move along, move along.
