Anne Frank Rules Apply: Stop Appropriating Jewish Pain

When you share images saying “Anne Frank Rules Apply” and have not called out anti-Jewish hate, you are appropriating Jewish pain and trauma.

It is not an understatement to stress that American democracy has been actively under attack since January 20 through executive orders. My own rights are being impacted through the attacks on transgender Americans. It should be infuriating to everyone that an unelected oligarch now has access to sensitive personal information. The outrage should not just be limited to those of us on the left. There ought to be more people calling out this coup from the right-wing. By remaining silent, it shows that they are fine with an unelected billionaire serving as America’s shadow president. At the same time, they are using Jews as political pawns by sharing “Anne Frank Rules Apply” images.

Keeping to the subject of Anne Frank, please stop using Jewish pain and trauma. I can understand if you are Jewish and sharing such images. We’ve been here before. The persecution of Jewish people during the past 2000 years of Jewish history is a reason why we cannot take safety for granted. For the non-Jewish readers, you might want to take a look at how the Israeli and European Jewish population has changed since around 2014. Knowing Jewish history, I always thought it would be anti-Jewish hate that would force me into making Aliyah. But here we are in 2025 and it’s looking like federally mandated transphobia is going to be what forces the move on me.

For all of you who are sharing the “Anne Frank Rules Apply” images on social media, I have some questions for you. Did you say anything after the barbaric attack in Israel on October 7 or in the days afterwards? This was the single worst attack on Jewish since the Holocaust so I hope you said something. Were you silent or indifferent during the surge of post-October 7 anti-Jewish hate? If you didn’t say anything, you are using Jews as political pawns and it needs to stop.

I have been extremely vocal about how many LGBTQ organizations and spaces went Jew-free after October 7. Jewbook became even more important in the days, weeks, and months following October 7. Why, you ask? Because the people we thought were friends and allies ended up abandoning us! I cannot stress this enough. You do not get to abandon your Jewish friends because you have decided to buy into a false definition of Zionism and then share “Anne Frank Rules Apply” images. There is a way to make a political point without exploiting Jews!

The past 16 months have made me question what people would have done during the Holocaust, let alone if they would have helped save Anne Frank and other Jews. America can be doing a better job with Holocaust education–this just goes without saying. Jews started fleeing Nazi Germany after Hitler came into power in 1933. However, America limited Jewish immigration while Britain controlled immigration in the land that would become Israel. All this is to say that European Jews were screwed and had nowhere to go. I recommend watching The U.S. and the Holocaust along with reading FDR and the Jews. I’d even add the new H.W. Brand books, America First: Roosevelt vs. Lindbergh in the Shadow of War.

What would you have done after November 1942 when the information in the Riegner Telegram went public? Would you have done something to save Anne Frank? People want to say that they would have done the right thing but seeing their silence during the surge of anti-Jewish late leads me to think they actually wouldn’t.

Ask yourself if you would have been an isolationist or interventionist during World War II. Isolationists pushed for America to stay out of World War II. In Charles Lindbergh’s words, the three main groups pushing for intervention were the Jews, British, and the Roosevelt administration. There is no shortage of material about the developments in Hollywood during this time, including Hollywood Hates Hitler! by Chris Yogerst. Meanwhile, Thomas Doherty’s Hollywood and Hitler: 1933-1939 shows what happened in Hollywood after the Hitler-Stalin Pact was signed. Every member of the Communist Party in America went from anti-Nazi to pro-Nazi or being indifferent.

On the subject of antisemitism, the Trump administration is also using Jews as political pawns. They are not at all serious about fighting anti-Jewish hate, much like those sharing the “Anne Frank Rules Apply” images. If they were, the convicted felon wouldn’t have pardoned so many anti-Jewish bigots. It would not surprise me if their Israel policy is messianic in nature. In fact, the recent executive order only targets leftist antisemitism and those protesting while residing in the US on a visa. Read about Project Esther in The Forward–it comes straight from Project 2025.

Project Esther has nothing to say about any of the explicitly antisemitic hate groups aligned with the far right. Ditto for one of the core drivers of antisemitic violence in the United States: conspiracy theories regularly promoted by figures within President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration, Trump’s friends like Elon Musk and Tucker Carlson, and Trump himself.

If you have not called out the surge of anti-Jewish hate following October 7, the only thing you are doing by sharing “Anne Frank Rules Apply” images is using Jews as political pawns. Please stop it. In all likelihood, you would not have bothered attempting to save Anne Frank and it shows.
