The Costume Designers Guild announced the 27th annual CDGA winners during a ceremony at The Ebell in Los Angeles on Thursday night.
All three film winners will be competing in the same category at the Oscars. They will be joined by A Complete Unknown and another CDGA nominee, Gladiator II. If you go by the guild winners when you fill out the ballot on Oscar Sunday, tonight’s winners might provide some clues. More often than not, a period film takes home the Oscar, especially since the first CDGA ceremony in 1999. There are some exceptions to this, of course. Mad Max: Fury Road, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever won in the years they were nomination. If I had to guess, Nosferatu is the heavy favorite alongside A Complete Unknown and Gladiator II. But then again, the Oscar could end up going to Conclave or Wicked.
Tonight’s CDGA kicks off a series of days in which we’ll have a better idea of how Oscar Sunday could go. The Critics Choice Awards take place on Friday night. CCA voting ended prior to the original January date. As such, CCA voters didn’t take the recent Karla Sofía Gascón scandal into account. The PGA Awards, DGA Awards, and Annie Awards will all take place on Saturday in what is the biggest night by far. PGA voting ended on January 30–the same day that Gascón’s tweets resurfaced and before the actress dug herself into a hole. While her Oscar campaign is dead in the water, it’s unknown as to just how much it’ll impact the film’s Best Picture chances.
In addition to the below winners, the CDGA also issued a number of special awards tonight.
