The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Spoofs Coldplay CEO Affair

Leave it to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to spoof the Astronomer CEO and HR chief getting caught cheating at a Coldplay concert in classic fashion.

After Stephen Colbert responded to last week’s news of CBS wrongfully canceling The Late Show in his monologue and discussed the reaction to his firing, he brought out Weird Al Yankovic and Normal Lin-Manuel Miranda since music has a way of cheering people up. They’re known for bringing people laughter and joy. If you’ve been paying attention to the news, anyone could have predicted that they were coming on to spoof what happened at the Coldplay concert. It’s not just social media managers getting in on the memeification, but the Philadelphia Phillies did so, too.

Stephen Colbert: That’s beautiful. That’s incredible. Wow, wow! Fellas, come on. I’ve got to say, fellas, thanks so much for being here to cheer the people up. Listen, I guess I’m sure we’re all eager to know what song you’re gonna do.

Lin-Manuel Miranda: “We are going to do some, Coldplay,”

Stephen Colbert: “Okay. Great, great. So you got a funny parody out?

Weird Al Yankovic: “No. I can’t think of anything funnier than Coldplay.”

Stephen Colbert: Well, gentleman, take it away.”

They started singing “Viva la Vida” but Miranda stops sand says, “This isn’t about us. This is about the audience. Jim, can we get some shots of them having a great time?”

The gag allowed Happy Gilmore 2 to get some free publicity ahead of its Netflix release this week. Additionally, it gave Colbert’s fellow New York-based talk show hosts an opportunity to show up after the cancelation. As for the “affair” in the gag, that came down to racist convicted felon Trump (in animated form) holding up the Paramount logo and then being embarrassed when he’s caught by the cameras. It’s at this point when Colbert is handed a letter from legal in an obvious reference to the CBS press statement.
