The Newsroom: The Complete Series – The Aaron Sorkin Drama Gets New Blu-ray Printing

The Newsroom: The Complete Series—from The West Wing and Sports Night creator Aaron Sorkin—received a new Blu-ray printing in early October.

Warner Bros. made an interesting choice when it came to the episode index. It lists every episode throughout the season rather than just those that are on an individual disc. For instance, if you were to put Disc 2 into your Blu-ray player and saw Episode 1 pop up in the index, it instructs you to insert Disc 1. This is very confusing and not something that I would have recommended. The same goes for listed features, especially since Disc 2 just lists audio commentaries for Episodes 3-4, rather than the episodes actually on the disc. Now once we get to The Newsroom Season 2, it doesn’t have this problem.

Maybe it’s because Season 3 of The Newsroom only contains 6 episodes but it’s shocking that the bonus features are lacking when compared to the first two seasons. Only one episode contains audio commentary during the third season!

While the pilot episode runs 73 minutes in length, the rest of The Newsroom episodes have listed runtimes falling between 52-64 minutes.

As far as accolades are concerned, Jeff Daniels won a single Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in three nominations.

Season 1

The Newsroom’s first season took viewers behind the scenes at the fictional Atlantis Cable News (ACN) with a focus on News Night anchor Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels), his new executive producer MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer), newsroom staff Jim Harper (John Gallagher Jr.), Maggie Jordan (Alison Pill), Sloan Sabbith (Olivia Munn), Neal Sampat (Dev Patel), Don Keefer (Thomas Sadoski), and ACN president Charlie Skinner (Sam Waterston). Together, they embarked on an ambitious and idealistic quest to deliver quality journalism, navigating both corporate pressures and personal challenges. All while building episodes around major news events from the recent past.

Season 2

In its second season, The Newsroom explores a storyline where the News Night team reports—and later retracts—a false story claiming the U.S. Marine Corps used sarin gas in Afghanistan in 2009. It is another example of Sorkin drawing on real events as it is inspired by a real 1998 controversy in which both CNN and TIME faced criticism for airing a similarly questionable report alleging sarin use during the Vietnam War’s Operation Tailwind

Season 3

The third and final season of The Newsroom follows Will, Mac, and the News Night team as they navigate two high-stakes crises: a looming hostile takeover of ACN and leaked classified government documents that threaten careers and spark a legal storm. Across six episodes, the show turns inward, exploring internal upheavals at the network while tackling issues like privacy, the influence of social media on traditional journalism, and corporate power struggles. Set against the Boston Marathon bombing, the season examines the challenge of maintaining journalistic integrity in the 24-hour news era, where crowd-sourced reporting and citizen journalism can spread misinformation as fast as the headlines themselves, forcing the team to confront personal and professional dilemmas that shape their futures.
