The Solzy Awards for 2025: The Best in Film

An annual tradition, Solzy at the Movies presents the Solzy Awards for 2025 as a way of honoring the best achievements this year in film.

I had to make a judgement call on a few films as to whether they are comedies or drama. There are too many films that blur the line. But for someone who splits awards into categories for he Solzy Awards, it means having to choose one or the other. Both My Dead Friend Zoe and Eleanor the Great are examples of films that blur the line.

There’s a universe where Marty Supreme ends up in my top films of the year. Unfortunately, my enjoyment of the film was diminished this week upon finding out that an actress in the film decided to use a white supremacist antisemitic slur. There is no reason to be using such a slur. I learned this one day before planning on rewatching for review this week and ahead of announcing the Solzy Awards. But unfortunately, I had to cancel those plans despite the fact that there is so much to enjoy about Marty Supreme in terms of Jewish representation. I wrote more about it on my Instagram.

I don’t have a 1 and 1A this year’s Solzy Awards like I have in prior years. You might notice that Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is missing. It just didn’t hit me in the same way and that’s before learning that one of the film’s stars decided to sign on and boycott the left-wing Israeli film industry. Are they boycotting other countries or is it just the one predominantly Jewish state? Knowing where talent or crew stands on this is something that weighs heavily in my decision to watch a film, let alone cover it.
