Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Vol. 1 Is A Must-Own

The Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Vol. 1 is a re-released collection of 50 classic shorts remastered and presented in a stunning audio and visual experience. While the collection came out on Blu-ray this past summer, it is a reprinting of a previously released collection. Both this and Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Vol. 2 were released again on Blu-ray. I don’t know if there are plans to re-release Vol. 3 but we’ll see.

You’ll find Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote, Pepe Le Pew, Foghorn Leghorn, and Speedy Gonzales showcased at their animated best in the 25 shorts collected together on the first disc. Put in disc 2 and it’s a mixture of one-shot classics and complete collections featuring Marvin the Martian, the Tasmanian Devil, Witch Hazel, Marc Anthony, and Ralph Phillips.

I’ve had Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Vol. 1 for a few months now and finally had time to break them out. The first thing I noticed was that I had seen a number of them already because of their being packaged as parts of other collections.

Tweetie Pie is the first short to pair both Tweetie and Sylvester.  The Fritz Freleng-directed short was the first WB short to win the Oscar for Animated Short Film. Fast and Furry-Ous marked the first appearance of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner.

Warner Bros. Pictures did its part in making films about patriotism in the lead-up to America’s entry into WWII, maybe more than any other studio. It’s no surprise then that Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Vol. 1 features one of those shorts, the Chuck Jones-directed Old Glory. In this short, Uncle Sam teaches Porky Pig the history of the United States of America, including Colonial America, the American Revolution, Old West, and Abraham Lincoln’s presidency. In depicting the humans, they rotoscope scenes from the likes of Give Me Liberty and The Declaration of Independence.

What’s Opera, Doc?, Duck Amuck, and One Froggy Evening are among the films to be selected to the National Film Registry.
