28th CDGA Winners Announced

The Costume Designers Guild announced the 28th annual CDGA winners during a ceremony at The Ebell in Los Angeles on Thursday night.

 The annual CDGA celebrated excellence in film, television, short form costume design, and costume illustration. Luxury Roman Maison, Bvlgari served as a strategic partner at the 28th CDGA and reintroduced a new edition of the Guild’s iconic statuette, The Adrian.

Actor Courtney Hope hosted the CDGA, which celebrated special honorees Michelle ColeJames CameronKate Hudson and Teyana Taylor, as well as the winners of the nine competitive award categories. Celebrities in attendance to present the Awards included Tracee Ellis Ross, Paul Feig, Katherine LaNasa, Janelle Monáe, Diallo Riddle, Samba Schutte, Jodie Turner-Smith, Damon Wayans and Sasheer Zamata.

Kate Hudson received the Spotlight Award, which honors an actor whose talent and career personify an enduring commitment to excellence, including a special awareness of the role and importance of Costume Design.

While onstage accepting her award, Hudson said, “Clothes are one of my great loves, but more than that, the artists who create them are.” Hudson continued, “I look at these costumes created throughout the years and they take my breath away. This year there’s been truly incredible work that is being celebrated and I’m honored to be here celebrating it with all of you.”

Michelle Cole accepted the Career Achievement Award, which recognizes an individual whose career in costume design has left an indelible mark on film and television. The evening’s Distinguished Collaborator Award was presented to James Cameron by Deborah L. Scott. The award is a special honor which recognizes individuals whose exceptional skills and contributions have significantly advanced the craft and art of costume design. It highlights the invaluable behind-the-scenes professionals whose dedication and expertise are essential to the storytelling process through costume design.

Cameron shared onstage, “These awards and this community that celebrates the art of design is so critical in this age of the onslaught of AI. We have to always, always honor the artist and human creativity, because you know what, AI don’t sew.”

Jodie Turner-Smith presented Teyana Taylor with the Vanguard Spotlight Award, which celebrates a trailblazer who ignites the imaginations of cognoscenti and audiences alike. This accolade is a tribute to a performing artist who sets new standards in their sphere, not only for their outstanding achievements but also for their courage as a visionary that serves as an inspiration to us all.

While onstage Taylor said, “Thank you so much to the Costume Designers Guild for this incredible honor. Receiving the Vanguard Spotlight Award from the community that helps shape how stories are seen, felt and remembered is deeply meaningful to me.” She continued, “Costume design has always been bigger than fashion in my life – it’s storytelling. Before a character ever speaks, what they wear is already telling you who they are – their strength, their vulnerability, their journey.”

While accepting the CDGA award for Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film for “Wicked: For Good” onstage, Paul Tazewell shared, “To have experienced the journey that I experienced creating the costumes, the looks for the world of ‘Wicked: Part I’ and ‘Wicked: For Good’ has changed my life in so many profound ways, and all I can say is thank you.”

Of the three film winners at the CDGA, only Frankenstein is nominated at the Oscars. It will compete against Marty Supreme, Hamnet, Avatar: Fire and Ash, and Sinners.

Excellence in Variety, Reality-Competition, Live Television

Excellence in Short Form Design

  • Dandyland – Episode 10 – Rafaella Rabinovich, Costume Designer

Excellence in Costume Illustration
