2021 BAFTA Awards: The Nominations

The British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) revealed the nominations for the EE British Academy Film Awards in 2021.

In glancing at the list, a major take away is Best Actress in a Leading Role is not going to be a consensus pick this year. If anything, the eventual Oscar winner might have one major win during these major awards coming down the stretch. BAFTA nominees Vanessa Kirby or Frances McDormand are also up for SAG Awards. I will note, however, that while Alfre Woodard picked up a nomination, she is ineligible for both the SAG Awards and upcoming Academy Awards show. This goes down to Clemency being released in 2020 across the pond. The US release came in December 2019. I’ll note that I had Alfre Woodard appear on all my awards nomination ballots in 2019. This is how much her performance stuck with me when I attended the Sundance awards screening.

What is most perplexing is how Promising Young Woman is tied for second with six nominations but Carey Mulligan falls short of a BAFTA nomination. I’m wondering if this is because of The Dig also seeing so much BAFTA love with five nominations. While this was my initial thought, her performance in The Dig wasn’t on the BAFTA long list. Personally, I wish that Netflix released The Dig later this year so that it would have a stronger awards push. However, I’m most excited to see some BAFTA love for Calm With Horses. While the film was released in the US under The Shadow of Violence, I knew it was a special film going into TIFF in 2019.

This year, the EE British Academy Film Awards will be celebrated across the weekend of 10 and 11 April. Two shows, recognizing the very best in film of the past year, will be broadcast virtually from London’s Royal Albert Hall. The first show, celebrating the craft of film, will be broadcast on Saturday, April 10 on BBC Two and BBC Two HD. The show on Sunday, April 11 will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC One HD. Both programs will be broadcast in all major territories around the world.

I’m not reformatting the press release to remove the ALL CAPS. The nominations are below.
