Benj Pasek and Justin Paul Achieve EGOT Status with Emmy Win

Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul achieved EGOT status following their songwriting win at the 76th Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Their win makes them the 20th and 21st artists to achieve the status in competitive categories. Another six artists have completed the EGOT with one non-competitive award. They are the second and third to accomplish the feat in 2024 after Elton John won an Emmy Award during the strike-delayed telecast.

Pasek is the second youngest (39 years, two months) while Paul is the third youngest (39 years, eight months) to acc0mplish the feat. Robert Lopez completed his first EGOT during a nine-year, eight-month span in 2014 at 39 years, eight days. Lopez completed his second EGOT in a seven-year span (June 27, 2010-March 4, 2018). Pasek and Paul completed the EGOT in 7 years, 6 months, and 13 days (February 26, 2017-September 8, 2024). As such, they have now completed the EGOT in the quickest amount of time.

Their win came in the category of Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for their song, “Which Of The Pickwick Triplets Did It?” The song appeared in the eight episode of Only Murders in the Building‘s third season, titled “Sitzprobe.” Benj Pasek and Justin Paul share writing credits for the song with Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

Their Oscar win came for La La Land‘s “City of Stars” during the 89th Academy Awards–music by Justin Hurwitz and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The trio would also earn a nomination that year for “Audition (The F0ols Who Dream).” Unfortunately, the song did not win a Grammy Award.

Dear Evan Hansen would win them Best Original Music and Best Musical at the 71st Tony Awards in 2017. Steven Levenson penned the book–music by Justin Paul, lyrics by Benj Pasek. The soundtrack album would also take home Best Musical Theater Album at the 60th Grammy Awards. Another Tony Award would follow as producers of A Strange Loop.

With their win, the list of artists needing an Emmy to complete the EGOT now contains 6 people. Unfortunately, all six of them are deceased.

Mazel tov to Benj Pasek and Justin Paul on an incredible feat!
