Elton John Completes EGOT With Emmy Win For Dodger Stadium Farewell

Elton John made history once again by completing an EGOT with tonight’s Emmy win for Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium. He is the 19th person to accomplish the achievement with all of the wins coming in a competitive situation. The win means that he also joins Tim Rice, his co-writer on The Lion King, in the prestigious club.

The three-hour epic concert was John’s final concert in North America. There were a trio of duets while many other entertainers were a part of the crowd. Not only this but it was the first global concert stream on Disney+. It also became a full-circle moment in his career, paying tribute to his 1975 concert at Dodger Stadium. In any event, it gave fans an opportunity to have a front row seat to say goodbye to the yellow brick road.

It took him 37 years to complete an EGOT after winning his first Grammy Award in 1987. At 76 years, 9 months, he became the second oldest person at the time of completing the EGOT. Only John Gielgud was older upon completing an EGOT when he won an Emmy in 1991. While John is the 19th to do so in competitive situations, there are also six others to complete an EGOT with one of the awards coming by way of a honorary or non-competitive award: Barbra Streisand (Tony), Liza Minnelli (Grammy), Harry Belafonte, James Earl Jones, Quincy Jones, and Frank Marshall (Oscars).
